Ocmulgee Mounds Education Project

The Ocmulgee Mounds Education Project will make a positive and lasting impact on both Education and Tourism in Georgia through a three-part plan for Macon’s National Park.

The Project includes the restoration of the iconic Woodland House, the construction of an outdoor amphitheater and also the addition of new S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) trunks to engage and enlighten thousands of children and adults who visit the park each year.

Please consider supporting the Project through a sponsorship or donation. More information about Sponsorship Levels can be found below. When donating online, please be sure to put “Leadership Macon 2019” in the notes field.

The Ocmulgee Mounds Education Project is a partnership between Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park, the Ocmulgee National Monument Association and the 2019 Class of Leadership Macon, a program of the Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce.

There are three phases to the education project:

  1. Outdoor Amphitheater and Classroom

    • The Ocmulgee Mounds Education Project will build an outdoor classroom for the thousands of school-aged children who visit the park each year through school field trips or family outings. This amphitheater will more than triple the number of guests who are able to participate in educational activities and will provide an opportunity for learning to take place in the natural elements of the park.

  2. Preservation and Tourism

    • The Ocmulgee Mounds Education Project will restore the Woodlands House that was originally built in 2016 by Neal Parr, a member of the Lower Muskogee Creek Tribe. The house, a popular visitors' attraction, was vandalized in February 2019 during the government shutdown and has been out of service since. By restoring the Woodland House, visitors can experience a near-authentic replication of how the Park’s original residents might have lived. With Ocmulgee becoming a national historic park, park attendance is expected to increase by thousands and enhancements to this park will support the local economy for years to come.

  3. S.T.E.A.M. Trunks

    • Interactive S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) trunks will be curated and provided to the Park for use by guests and educators. Each trunk is comprised of a variety of educational lesson plans and hands-on activities for all ages. These trunks will highlight the impact of this naturally enlightening park in a way that is tactile and experiential.
